New Station co-directors Dr Emily Howells and Dr David Abrego are now 4 months into the role and settling in well. They write: “It’s been a busy and rewarding time as we become more familiar with the myriad of day-to-day operations, reporting, and forward planning. We’re thrilled to be here, supporting the incredibly important research, education and communication that is part of Station operations, and we’re honoured to be continuing the legacy left by Anne and Lyle”. The Australian Museum has also appointed a new full-time Station staff member, Norbert Rapolthy. With a background in marine science, aqua culture and landscaping, Norbet is a welcome resource supporting day-to-day operations.
In late May outgoing co-directors Dr Anne Hoggett and Dr Lyle Vail were honoured at a lunch hosted by the LIRRF at the Australian Museum, at which their exceptional 35 years of leadership was recognized. Anne and Lyle shared the stage with Trustees Charlie Shuetrim and Dr Penny Berents, and in conversation stepped through a photographic timeline, covering topics such as shifts in research focus and the development of Station facilities over the past 3 decades. There was barely a dry eye in the room as supporters watched two heartfelt tributes from eminent scientists who acknowledged Anne & Lyle’s exceptional contribution to supporting coral reef science worldwide.
