Education

Program 4

An important part of the work of Lizard Island Research Station is to facilitate education about coral reefs. Student groups from Australian and international schools and universities use the station as a base for educational visits. All of these groups benefit from the research facilities that are provided by our Foundation.

Coral Reef Study Tour

A new initiative for the Foundation is to provide opportunities for future researchers and their mentors in which highly-achieving high school science students and inspirational teachers will be immersed in coral reef science at LIRS. The first such trip was scheduled for April 2020 but COVID-19 forced its cancellation. Students and teachers had been selected through a competitive process for a 10-day trip to LIRS in which they would learn about coral reefs and experience life as a field researcher. We still hope to run this potentially life-changing program for the same group as soon as it is feasible to do so.

The initial trip has been funded by three wonderful donors –
James N. Kirby Foundation
Corella Fund
Ken Coles AM and Rowena Danziger AM.

We are seeking others to join them to enable this program to continue annually.

Learning with real meaning and purpose is always the most powerful and so it has been with this field trip. [My son] came home abuzz and had us sit down down and view a confronting video on the impact of the fishing industry on marine ecology. Such behaviour is reflective of transformative learning.
