All field research at the Station is done either directly by senior scientists or under their close supervision.
LIRRF donors also support early-career scientists by funding internship positions and Fellowship awards. Doctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships are offered at a career stage when financial assistance is most needed. Most recipients go on to make lifetime contributions in their specialist fields. A list of current and past Fellows is available on the Station website.
The Station also helps early-career scientists develop practical skills. Their work typically involves operation of research vessels, snorkeling, scuba diving and team leadership. Boat and dive certifications they obtain before arriving on the island do not assure competence in field conditions. The practical experience and guidance the Station provides in this regard is quite important.
